Edible Garden Design

plan

Before embarking on your veggie patch project you will need to devise a thoughtful plan. Consider how the patch will be absorbed into the current operation of your yard. e.g. the backyard cricket matches. Or if you intend on making the patch the centerpiece of your new layout, how will the cricket pitch and outdoor life revolve around it? How many vegetables can you manage – what sized plot suits? These are the first decisions you will need to make because growing veggies is part of a lifestyle that will no doubt change and enhance the current one you live.

With the potential spaces at hand, compare them relevant to sunlight. A north facing patch will collect more winter and summer sun than those facing south. And while most veggies prefer full sunlight each and every hour of the day, if in the position of compromise, morning sunlight is preferable to that of the afternoon which, in summer, can burn your harvest.

Once the position has been chosen, the layout of the veggies should incorporate companion growing and remember to always plant what you intend on eating.

In terms of the materials you use consider their functionality and aesthetics.

Veggie Patch Installation

install

With your plan in hand, go about its implementation, whether by raised garden bed boxes, halved out wine barrels, large apple crates or directly into the earth. This involves clearing the space, importing materials – soils, composts, seeds/seedlings – and then setting the irrigation. Legally you can water by drip irrigation two days a week and this method has proven the most effective means of watering your vegetables; penetrating directly to the root of the plant with little to no evaporation if mulched well.
