Summer fruiting raspberries hold their fruit on the canes extremely well so you can revisit every couple of days to pick fruit at the desired ripeness. These almost thornless canes produces berries to harvests from early to mid summer, well into autumn.

Planting: Prefers full sun to part shade in slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the roots. Cover with soil and water in well. Some well rotted compost or very old animal manure will be beneficial.

Growing: Mulch well to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, but keep away from the trunk to prevent rot. Apply an all-round fertiliser to soil when growth begins in early spring. Canes that have died or beared fruit in the past season should be cut down at ground level during winter.

Harvesting: Fruit is ripe when it is well coloured and comes easily off the stem. Best eaten fresh although raspberries will freeze well and make excellent jams and jellies.
