BLOSSOM END ROT

Even once plants have flowered, there is still no certainty that they will bear fruit. Early-season plants can often suffer from blossom-end rot, whereby the fruit will develop a dry sunken decay at the end opposite its stem. This is not a pest, parasite or disease process, but a physiological problem.

We find that patience is generally the best remedy and blossom-end rot seems to abate naturally as plants mature and the season progresses. Nevertheless, a consistent daily watering practice, mulching and supplemental calcium help to avoid this problem.

Optimal Conditions

When conditions are warm and watering has been erratic

Signature

The rotting or hardened blisters at the end tips of fruit

Prevention

Keep watering consistent and mulch your garden beds. A calcium deficiency also increases the probability of infection; an application of rock minerals and /or lime will help greatly. Don’t over fertilize with nitrogen and potassium as this also swings probability in its favour.

Coping

Blossom-end rot is typically an early-season problem that abates.

Eradicating

Once you have it, it’s a matter of following the prevention practices and in time the problem will abate
