An extra sweet strain of Anise, this herb is used to make one of the best herb teas with the leaves possessing a naturally sweet, wonderful anise taste & fragrance. It has lovely purple flowers that the bees love, so great as a herbaceous border to attract pollinators and other beneficial insects.
PLANTING
Sow directly into your patch when daytime temperatures regularly surpass 18-20 degrees. If still too cold, propagate in seed trays and transplant when conditions have improved.
WATERING
In ground: Water daily for the first 4 weeks and 3-4 times a week in the absence of rainfall thereafter. Watering frequency may need to be elevated during hot weather.
In Pots: Water daily, in the absence of rainfall, for the entirety of its lifecycle. The best practice is to water in the morning, however on extremely warm days a late afternoon water may also be necessary.
MAINTENANCE
By deadheading flowering plants like Anise Hyssop you will encourage extended and repeat flowering throughout the season. In Autumn cut back the spent flower heads at the base.
HARVESTING
An extra sweet strain of Anise, this herb is used to make one of the best herb teas with the leaves possessing a naturally sweet, wonderful anise taste & fragrance. You can use it fresh or dried. Fresh you can pick it by the leaf or if you want to dry it for later use cut it at the base about two thirds down (preferably right before the flowers bloom) then hang it upside down for 7-10 days with some twine and afterwards store it in a bag or jar.
TIP
This is a tall plant that grows more like a small shrub, than a flower. Make sure it has some room to sprawl in the veggie patch.
